Amyl & The Sniffers – ‘Gacked On Anger’
Sleaford Mods (featuring Amy Taylor, lead singer of Amyl & The Sniffers) – Nudge It
IDLES – ‘Well Done’
I think these songs connect in some sort of way
I happened to stumble across ‘Nudge It’ on YouTube
For a start they’re all pretty angry and letting out frustrations
I think anyway
‘Gacked On Anger’ & ‘Well Done’ is similar in referring to modern social problems I think
‘Nudge it’ has a go at IDLES (or Joe in particular)
Apparently he doesn’t like him making songs about working class/the poor
But like I’ve heard and seen in interviews
He himself said
He recognises his privilege
And uses his platform to challenge the Tories
I like the song, despite being a massive IDLES fan
I think the lyrics in ‘Nudge It’ are interesting
He takes issue at the ‘This ropey idea about love and connection ‘
The ‘class tourist’ line is interesting
‘You are fuckin’ class tourist you mix your social groups up’
First time I’ve heard that to be honest (class tourist)
Well anyway
They’re all angry and not pleasant songs if you like (but they’re very raw)
The way I see it
I take bits from all 3 songs
I understand where Sleaford Mods are coming from
But I think Joe from IDLES (and the band in general) are having a massively positive effect on so many people
2 of IDLES’ band members lost their mothers too
I think Joe’s experience of his Mum passing away has understandably had a deep effect on him
And has quite possibly made him even more empathic and deep than perhaps other people are
Back to the ‘This ropey idea about love and connection’
I completely see both sides
Love (however you define it) and connection is massively important (I’d argue human necessities in a sense)
But some people find it difficult to make themselves vulnerable and open up
And maybe we need to put on a front (or not be too open, perhaps jokey or easy goin’) sometimes to protect ourselves
And to go the ‘Gacked On Anger’
This brings us to ‘hate’ or anger (or letting out emotions)
The emotions coming out in this song is brilliant
As well as being very rational I think
This song and ‘Well done’ relates to employment
And pressures put on by society
“Well done, why don’t you get a job.”
“Well done why don’t you watch football.”
(Loads of people don’t like football and that’s absolutely fine)
“Well done why don’t you win a medal, Tarquin wins a medal.”
“I’d rather cut my nose off to spite my face.” (When you get so annoyed with things you want to stand against it, and can take pride in doing so)
‘I’m working my ass off every day, for the minimum wage and I don’t get payed’
‘I can’t go to sleep because there’s trouble on my mind’
‘I’m stressed about money, gacked on anger’
There was references to IDLES (or Joe) droppin’ names in (in ‘Nudge It’)
Well I think this is a hip hop technique
They are pretty much a punk or rock band but I think their lyrics have hip hop elements
Lots of old hip hop songs have this
IDLES have had an unbelievably massive positive effect on me anyway (especially during really tough times during the pandemic)
These are my thoughts or views or interpretations, you don’t have to feel the same and that’s fine
I think some songs are clear cut lyrics wise but there’s defo plenty that’s aren’t and are open to interpretation
Thought I’d be interesting to this anyway
