Here’s a song for you… Grounds by IDLES https://open.spotify.com/track/6jYxxjpNcjglJbAyoxdNQO?si=sGFuEsi4S62KGIMKXrjJEw&utm_source=native-share-menu
I heard these lyrics today today and thought wow, sometimes I think I or we hear songs or lyrics at the right time, as in to capture how we are feeling at particular moment.
As with lyrics in general, they can be interpreted in different ways, I hope these lyrics and me including them on here/on my social media is taken in the right way.
I am not a big fan of swearing but I think it can have a sort of poetic effect, like highlight an issue or show a point being made.
By interpretation of these lyrics are, we can be offended or hurt by words said, and that is ok to an extent as we are human, and we have very right to want to be understood and respected for who we are – but we also need to find ways of solving problems or dealing with our emotions or how we interact as a community.
I find writing my feelings down in some way, or on a device, or sharing music or listening to particular lyrics (or like minded people on podcasts) or having calm discussions about it to be really helpful.
Also, I think being able to say what we feel, within reason , is important.
There is a reference to race and class in the song too, and the ‘Strength in numbers’ and ‘I am I, unify’ part I especially like.
I mainly remember the lyrics well but I do check websites such as Genius and Song Meanings and the like to see what they say, although I think in a funny sort of way, the way we hear and interpret lyrics is great and interesting in it’s self.
I actually think I put I instead of I’ve on my Instagram story but ah well.
Quotes can be roughly edited anyway.
We listen to lyrics in different ways and the option of hearing songs for ourselves is there, as well as looking the lyrics up (Genesis and Spotify – for some songs at least – are handy in that sense).
Listening to IDLES, and other music, is helping me deal with difficult emotions at times, that and writing (even if it is experimental or writing notes or whatever) or other things can act as outlets to express ourselves or let things off our chests or do it because we like it or want to challenge ourselves.
