Best Position Changes In Recent History (An Experimental Article)

Some players are versatile, arguably many are in the modern game, and some managers have decided to get more out of what is at their disposal by tweaking a few positions in their teams.

Not all, but many attacks are more fluid than in the past, players appear to be in one position on paper but don’t necessarily stay there all the time.

Whether it be through dropping back to help defend, wide forwards sometimes arriving at the back post or coming a bit more centrally to link up with team mates, we are not necessarily seeing players looking like table footballers all the time, and it is actually quite interesting to see sutble changes from game to game (possibly depending on the opposition).

Alaba

Guardiola played Alaba, previously known as conventional left back, in midfield, and Flick has played him at centre back and most notably en route to Bayern Münich winning the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League.

Bale

Having played at left back for Spurs under Harry Redknapp, where he struggled to win games under the former Portsmouth FA Cup winning manager, has gone on to be one of the best wide forwards in world football and become a multiple UEFA Champions League winner for Real Madrid.

Wijnaldum

The Dutchman was signed from Newcastle United, having played effectively as a wide midfielder, but Klopp surprised many when he saw him as a midfielder in a 3, Wijnaldum plays higher up the pitch for Holland and pops up with a fair few goals (he scores for Liverpool occasionally, and has scored big goals in big moments in big games against the likes of Barcelona, Spurs, Manchester City, and Roma in recent seasons).

Gerrard

Gerrard scored over 100 goals for Liverpool, and he seemingly had an even bigger goal threat after Benitez pushed higher up to play off Torres, he also occasionally played of the right side of midfield for the former La Liga winner.

Firmino

The Brazilian was playing on the left of Liverpool’s attack earlier on in his career in England, it took him some time to settle and arguably his big coming of age moment came away in a win Manchester (1-4) in 2015/16, where he linked up brilliantly well with Coutinho in a front 3 of sorts and scored and assisted in that game as a sort of false 9.

He continues that role to this day (at the point of writing) and despite, up and down form, is the highest scoring Brazilian in Premier League history and now has a UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA World Club Championship and Premier League winners medal to his name under Jurgen Klopp.
